Basic Label Verification
Check the composition label: Legitimate products clearly state the composition ratio. Pure wool suits must be labeled "100% Wool" or "Pure Wool"; styles featuring "Super 110's" (or similar yarn count ratings) offer a reliable indicator of quality.
Beware of exaggerated claims: Any suit claiming a yarn count exceeding "Super 250's" is falsely advertised. Common affordable Italian fabric brands include VBC and REDA; do not judge authenticity solely based on vague marketing claims like "Imported from Italy/UK."


Tactile and Visual Assessment
Touch test: Pure wool fabric feels smooth and refined; it feels silky when stroked with the grain and slightly prickly against the grain. Fabrics made of pure chemical fibers or high percentages of polyester feel stiff or tacky and lack the natural loftiness of wool.
Luster observation: Pure wool has a natural, soft sheen that is not harsh on the eyes. Synthetic wool-like fabrics often have a strong, reflective quality, showing distinct, glaring sparkles in direct sunlight.
Resilience test: Clench the fabric tightly in your fist and release it quickly. Pure wool has high resilience, springing back to its original shape almost instantly with little to no wrinkling. Fabrics with high synthetic content recover slowly and retain visible creases.


Practical Identification Techniques
Burn test: Extract a small amount of yarn and ignite it. Pure wool fibers smell like burning hair and crumble into ash when pinched. Synthetic fabrics emit a plastic odor and form hard, fused clumps after burning.
Friction test: Extract a yarn strand, separate it into individual fibers, and rub them repeatedly between your palms. Pure animal fibers have surface scales that cause them to migrate vertically (move up and down) during rubbing; synthetic fibers do not exhibit this characteristic.
